Wellness is. . . A Lifestyle

2008 Community Flu Clinic
Kimball Health Services immunized over 400 people in about 3 1/2 hours on October 30, 2008. Vehicles lined up for up to two blocks around the Kimball Event Center for the drive-thru option. This was an excellent opportunity for a bio-preparedness drill, testing our ability to immunize a lot of people in a very short time. Contact Pennie Anderson, KHS community health and wellness nurse, (235-1952 Ext. 256) for more details.

October 2007 Drive-thru Flu Clinic
Imagine if a pandemic broke out in the Kimball area, would local officials be ready to mass vaccinate residents?
A Saturday morning drive–thru flu clinic at the Kimball Jr.-Sr. High put the Kimball Health Services staff to the test. Dozens of cars lined up on the east side of the school as drivers and passengers rolled up their sleeves for flu shots. Others, including about 50 children, were vaccinated inside the school. “We offered the drive-thru clinic for residents with limited mobility, who had trouble getting in and out of a vehicle,” said Sue Goodell, director of nursing at Kimball Health Services. “As it turned out, a lot of folks just enjoyed the convenience of not having to park and go inside.” “It was the first time we’ve tried this in Kimball, and it worked very well,” Goodell said.

Nurses and staff took each person’s health history and quizzed them about any allergies, collected the $15 fee, gave the vaccine and followed with band-aid. In all, 417 people took part, with the help of some 20 volunteers.
“We were really happy with the turnout, and it was an excellent drill for us,” said Sylvia Lichius, KHS director of infection control. “The idea is to try to evaluate if we have the personnel, equipment and space to immunize the community. That way in case of an emergency, people can get through this as quickly as possible.”

The Centers for Disease Control and prevention say October and November are the best months to get the flu vaccine, but it can be given through December as well. Flu season runs October through May. Those encouraged to get the vaccine include children over 6 months, those over 50 years old, pregnant women, and those with chronic medical conditions.
